Biophilic Design: What Living Walls Actually Do for Indoor Air

Plants exchange gases with their environment and their growing media hosts microbial activity that can break down certain airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — the mechanism behind NASA's well-known (if often over-generalized) clean-air research from the 1980s.

In practice, the effect of a single houseplant is small; the effect of a properly sized, ventilated living wall system integrated with a building's airflow is a different, more measurable proposition. Scale and airflow design matter as much as plant selection.

Biophilic design earns its name from a broader idea, too — human wellbeing and productivity measurably respond to visible greenery and natural patterns indoors, independent of the air-chemistry question. Both effects are part of why offices, schools, and clinics increasingly ask for it.
